    An Apple a Day...
It was Ben Franklin who, citing in Poor Richard's Almanac 250 years ago stated, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" and he was right. Apples aren't just a source of vitamins and minerals, they are a major source of dietary fiber. These tasty treasts come in many colors, can be sweet or tart and are a great addition to a healthy diet.  Did you know that there are over 2500 varieties of apples grown in the U.S.?  The varieties are endless, everything from a Pink Lady to an Arkansas Black.  If you have never "ventured out" in your apple eating we suggest you try a variety you have never tried before.  You may be pleasantly surprised.   Try eating an apple or 2 a day and keeping the doctor away!

This Week's Featured Recipe:  Maple Baked Apples


It is a special time of year when we gather together with family and friends and share traditions and foods.  Many of the foods we share are come from recipes passed down from generation to generation.   We hope you enjoy this 
relatively healthy alternative to the sweets oftened served this time of year and we wish you healthy holiday traditions as you celebrate the season with the ones you love. 

    Maple Baked Apples:
    6 medium tart apples
    1/2 cup raisins
    6 TBLS organic brown sugar
    1 TBLS organic cane sugar
    1/4 cup maple syrup
    1/2 cup orange juice
    1 tsp cinnamon
 
Core apples from stem ends leaving the bottoms intact.  Place in shallow baking dish.  Mix raisins and brown sugar and pack into apple cavities.  Drizzle syrup over apples and pour orange juice into bottom of  baking dish.  Mix cane sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples.  Bake in 350 degree oven, basting 2 or 3 times, until apples are tender (approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on size of apples).  Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream.
